For
the past decade, Jim Walters has looked out of his Bravura Corp. offices at
First and Washington streets only to see a row of dilapidated Main Street
structures falling increasingly into disrepair. The local architect, who has
spent much of his professional career working on downtown redevelopment
projects, recalls that looking at the "derelict buildings" inspired
him to try "to imagine how one could change that and develop them into
something that's worthwhile."

We're
talking about Butchertown. There's a snazzy new baseball stadium an
outfielder's throw away, plus easy access to Waterfront Park. A planned
"Extreme Games" park for skater dudes, and the coming
"eMain" district for Louisville's burgeoning high-tech industry also
adjoin the Butchertown area

Water

As early as next spring, a
water taxi may be operating on the Ohio River, making a regular, leisurely

Cyber Sense
It
is different now. The world is changing once again. Just when we thought we
could launch new dot-coms, run up the stock price, have a grand party and
rejoice in a New Economy, reality has a nasty little way of sneaking in -- like
Dr. Seuss' "Grinch Who Stole Christmas" -- and disrupting our
pattern. Yes, it is different now for businesses in the New Economy.

A
Web site today is no longer merely a statement of technological sophistication,
it must respond to a need or create and respond to a need. Even the most
conservative predictions indicate that for most businesses, the Web site will
have to be able to transact business. Rather than waste money or lose competitive
advantage, the time to refine your Web strategy is now.

The
compulsion to create our own e-verbiage has turned being clever into a cottage
industry. We can't seem to help ourselves. The problem is that clever becomes
hackneyed, and hackneyed becomes silly. Witness: e-culture, e-page, e-vote,
e-signature, e-volution, e-yada and e-sex. It's affecting our E-nglish. http://www.bizjournals.com/louisville/stories/2000/11/20/editorial3.html
Small businesses learn to tap federal grants that help foot
the bill for promising research
Many start-up businesses and researchers have
promising innovations, but no money to develop their ideas. Federal programs
that give money to qualified companies enables them to chase their dreams. The
government, in turn, benefits from the innovations
