SPECIAL REPORT

The eMain Team would like to welcome the University of Louisville and Louisville Medical Center Development Corporation’s new biomedical and information technology incubator and innovation center to the eMain Neighborhood. Officials from the University of Louisville, the Louisville Medical Center Development Corp. and local and state government broke ground on June 7 for a $10 million business incubator that will be run by the university and the development corporation. The incubator brings together the Medical Center Development Corp.'s planned life sciences business incubator and the University of Louisville's Information Technology Resource Center.

Galt Houses will get makeover

Louisville's four largest hotels -- including the Galt House and Galt House East on the downtown riverfront -- are going to get a major makeover. The work, to be done over the next two or three years, will start with the Galt House properties, which may get a health club, a new conference center, and one or more new restaurants. The work will include major renovation of the lobbies and other public space and modernization of the entrances to the two hotels.

Presbyterian move helps Louisville

Beyond the promise of jobs, local officials predicted the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) headquarters location would spark waterfront revitalization, inspire economic development and import a small army of educated, visionary social activists. As some 3,000 Presbyterians gather for their first General Assembly in Louisville since it became their capital city, they will see firsthand how some of those dreams were realized.

Time-consuming chore a must-do for start-ups

Call it business-plan phobia. The thought of writing one has stopped many a dreamer in his or her tracks. Some in the middle of writing a plan question whether it's worth it. Those who conquer it, however, often are thankful for what the struggle taught them. The good news is that plenty of help is available in the Louisville area for people seeking market research and other business-plan-related information.

PVA office records now available online at libraries

Jefferson County residents once had to travel to the property valuation administrator's office, or buy a monthly subscription, to retrieve information on local properties. But because of a new service, the same records now are free online at all 17 Louisville Free Public Library branches.

Simple hand gestures command computer

Believe it or not, the mouse could become extinct one day. Keyboards might punch out as well. Cybernet Systems Corp., a research and development company in Ann Arbor, Mich., has developed software that lets people interact with computers through simple hand gestures. Cybernet Systems and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said the program will be used as part of a new Bioastronautics Exhibit at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
