A works in progress

Glitter, glass and the glamour of art is the mix for the new Glassworks building that partially opens this week on West Market Street. Despite the debris and dust of construction, the shape of what's to come is clear. The ambitious project is intended to be more than a stop for gallery-hoppers: It is expected to change the face and habits of Louisville.

A renaissance in Butchertown

The community has been undergoing a metamorphosis, emerging as a chic district for young professionals, artists and interior designers and decorators who are buying and renovating historic homes and opening studios there. Part of Butchertown's revival can be credited to the infusion of nearly $90 million in city and state projects along its borders -- Louisville Slugger Field, a planned extreme sports park, the expansion of Waterfront Park and the Home of the Innocents campus.

As PC turns 20, nostalgic look back

"Amazing Telephone Breakthrough! Cordless Handset Gives You Walk & Talk' Convenience Without Tangling Cords!" Don't worry, this isn't a report about decades-old technology. It's a headline from a 1981 RadioShack catalog. With the PC turning 20 this month, now is a ripe opportunity to take a spin down memory lane.

New modem puts a little pep into dial-up service

If you're still using a dial-up modem to connect to the Internet, you are no doubt well aware of its drawbacks. Even with a 56 kbps modem, connecting to your Internet service provider can be painfully slow, uploading can sometimes occur at a snail's pace, and you could be missing important calls if you don't have two phone lines. But a recent change in the way 56k modems communicate wipes out all of these hassles.
