| Breaking News: High-technology
training center slated downtown
On November 29, Louisville Mayor Dave Armstrong announced that the city is establishing a technology training center on East Main Street where area students and employers can use the most up-to-date communication technologies. TheCommunity@eMain will be in the Clocktower Building at 123 E. Main St., which Armstrong wants to make the centerpiece of a technology-related business district. Jefferson County Public Schools and the University of Louisville are joining the city to sponsor the center, and will use it to train students. But Armstrong also envisions it as a place that other agencies and businesses may use for technology training, and as a way to train and keep talented young people in the community. The center could become a central agency that pairs students with companies offering technology internships, creating connections that could lead to full-time jobs. Developing a work force skilled in technologies will be critical to the growth of the local economy, Armstrong said at a press conference yesterday, and the center could become an incubator for that work force. The Community@eMain joins Bellarmine's Center for eWorld Education, which is also located in the Clocktower Building. Bellarmine has been offering seminars since October 1999 that are targeted to high-level executives to help them deal with complex issues that arise in the modern workplace and determine how to integrate that learning into action plans for their own businesses and careers. Bellarmine's Center for eWorld Education has recently partnered with Carnegie Mellon University to offer Carnegie Technology Education Classes. The program begins January 8 and 10, 2002.
