Tech district may be poised to turn corner

Almost two years ago, Mayor Dave Armstrong stood in a drafty, vacant building at Brook and Main streets and declared he was creating a technology-business-based development area for Louisville, to be known as eMainUSA. Aldermen begin rezoning process for downtown housing
To help clear the way for a downtown housing development, the Louisville Board of Aldermen has taken the first step to rezone four acres of city-owned land along East Main and East Market streets that once belonged to the Brinly-Hardy Co. The $4.8 million first phase would produce 36 loft apartments and 11,000 square feet of retail space. The second phase is expected to include at least 75 apartments and additional commercial development -- mainly offices and perhaps some retail space -- on both sides of Preston just south of Main. Mayor Dave Armstrong has called the planned housing a centerpiece of his effort to promote development of new housing across downtown.
