The Community@eMain
On January 23, more than 20 students from the Doss
High School Magnet Career Academy participated in The
Community @ eMain's first business job shadowing project.
That morning, students from Doss’ Geographical Information
Systems (GIS) class met with University of Louisville
professor Dr. Bob Forbes, who is in the Department of
Geography and Geosciences, and toured the campus. That
afternoon, students visited Gresham Smith & Partners,
Metropolitan Sewer District, Spatial Data Integrations,
and the Jefferson County PVA. Follow-up has been planned
with the Army Corp of Engineers to visit Eastern, Central,
and Jeffersontown High Schools in late February and March
to expose students to other applications of GIS.

Tech district may be poised
to turn corner
Almost two years
ago, Mayor Dave Armstrong stood in a drafty, vacant
building at Brook and Main streets and declared he was
creating a technology-business-based development area
for Louisville, to be known as eMainUSA. In a period
of economic downturn, the area has seen a steady flow
of development; and soon, city officials believe, it
will start paying off.

Aldermen begin rezoning
process for downtown housing
To help clear the way for a downtown housing development,
the Louisville Board of Aldermen has taken the first
step to rezone four acres of city-owned land along East
Main and East Market streets that once belonged to the
Brinly-Hardy Co. The $4.8 million first phase would
produce 36 loft apartments and 11,000 square feet of
retail space. The second phase is expected to include
at least 75 apartments and additional commercial development
-- mainly offices and perhaps some retail space -- on
both sides of Preston just south of Main. Mayor Dave
Armstrong has called the planned housing a centerpiece
of his effort to promote development of new housing
across downtown.

Restaurants take shape at

Wellinghurst Steak House, offering upscale dining, and
Browning's, a brew pub geared to patrons who want to
kick back, will open at Louisville Slugger Field around
March 1. Work began in October on the restaurants, which
will be open year-round for lunch and dinner. Together
they will occupy the eastern half of the old train shed
that serves as the entrance to the Louisville Bats'
ballpark on East Main Street near Interstate 65.

Louisville to use telemics
technology to monitor streetlights
The city of Louisville has reached an agreement
with Louisville-based Telemics Inc. to test the company's
wireless street-light monitoring system. Telemics will
install its Verifier Program in the city's eMain district.
It will be located on East Main Street between Second
and Hancock streets. Telemics, a company located in
the city's eMain district, began developing the technology
