Diversifying lets bCatalyst
remain viable
During the heady days of the booming economy of 2000,
bCatalyst dreamed of clustering promising companies in
a single place, providing guidance and some capital, then
watching them prosper. Seven prominent businessmen and
venture capitalists launched bCatalyst in February 2000,
eventually moving it into a rehabilitated industrial site
on West Washington Street on the lower slope of the eMain
district. Three years and one jarred economy later, most
business accelerators are essentially dead. While nonprofit
business incubators have survived, venture-capital-based
ones have largely collapsed or been forced to make radical
changes to their business plans. And bCatalyst is no exception.
Today, one month after marking its third anniversary,
the accelerator is just one piece of the closely held
company's pie. In November 2001, it began offering technology
research services to local and regional venture-capital
firms, an offshoot of previous work scrutinizing opportunities
and business plans for start-up companies. The company
then moved into the brokerage business last spring, managing
mergers and acquisitions. And a fourth business segment
also has roots in the accelerator: operations management
for early stage companies.
